|RHistory:|N Columbus saw the island1498, but it was not colonized until 1650 by the French. During the years that followed Grenada alternately belonged belonged to France and Great Britain until they were finally occupied by the British in 1784.
In 1974 Grenada became an independent nation, though still a member of the Commonwealth and recognizing the British sovereign as head of state.
Grenada is the smallest independent country in the western hemisphere.
In 1979 the prime minister was ousted in a socialistic coup and in 1983 the socialistic prime minister was ousted in a military coup. After that coup the USA and six Caribbean countries sent troops to Grenada and threw out all Cuban advisors. After nine months the international troops left Grenada that returned to democratic rule.
